RECOVERING SYCAMORE AND DISCOVERING WASHINGTON’S HERITAGE

Sycamore Preservation Fund is a 501c(3) non-profit corporation founded for the purpose of recovering, conserving and preserving the 1765 Sycamore Cemetery located on Bonner Hill near Oakdale Cemetery. Revolutionary patriot officers, legislators, justices and the parents of Washington’s founder rest here among other family members. Our mission is to return this historic burying ground, long considered lost to time, to present day Washington and Beaufort County as an indelible monument to our colonial ancestors.

PHASE 1
SITE PREPARATION AND RESEARCH

Genealogy and technical methods research followed by extensive probing to establish safe perimeters around the burial area. Clearing of heavily overgrown vegetation, first with goats and then larger machines after more precise probing. Final clearance of the burial area by hand, followed by thorough grave search and marking

PHASE 2
ARCHAEOLOGY

Ground penetrating radar will be used to further search for graves and gravestone. Surface excavation will follow to determine burial type, need for repair and to search for identification of the interred.

PHASE 3
CONSERVATION

Burials will be conserved in a respectful . age-appropriate manner. Broken headstones will be repaired and reset professionally. When complete, there will be final landscaping and fencing for period consistency.
